There is something I need to confess.

It is not something I am proud of.

But healing has taught me that honesty is where freedom begins.

Several months ago, I made a decision that surprised a lot of people.

I walked away from social media.

Not because I believe social media is sinful.

Not because I think Christians should never use it.

I walked away because God showed me something about my own heart that I did not like.

And once I saw it, I could not ignore it.

I realized there were times when I found myself watching other people's struggles.

Not because I wanted terrible things to happen to them.

But because something inside me felt a strange sense of relief knowing I wasn't the only one struggling.

That realization broke my heart.

Misery really does love company.

There is something in our fallen nature that finds comfort when someone else's life looks messier than ours.

We may never admit it out loud.

But if we're honest...

Sometimes another person's struggle makes our own feel smaller.

And that is not the heart of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit lovingly convicted me.

Not with condemnation.

With love.

He wasn't trying to shame me.

He was inviting me to become more like Christ.


Healing Begins When We Stop Blaming Everyone Else

One of the greatest gifts God has given me is the ability to become honest with myself.

Not brutally honest.

Lovingly honest.

There is a difference.

For years, I spent so much time asking God to heal what other people had done to me.

The abuse.

The rejection.

The abandonment.

The betrayal.

And He has done miraculous healing in those places.

But then one day, He gently asked me a different question.

"Jennifer...what about the parts of your own heart that still need Me?"

That question changed everything.

Because healing is not only allowing God to heal what happened to us.

It is allowing Him to heal what grew inside us because of it. This is a huge part of How to Guard Your Heart in a World Full of Negativity.


I Treat My Heart the Same Way I Treat My Kitchen

One of the ways I protect myself is by being careful about what comes into my home.

I don't keep certain foods in my house.

Not because chocolate, chips, or desserts are evil.

I simply know Jennifer.

I know my weaknesses.

I know that if certain foods are sitting in my pantry, eventually they will end up on my plate.

So I don't depend on willpower.

I build wisdom into my environment.

Then I realized...

Why wasn't I doing the same thing with my mind?

Why was I being intentional about what entered my body but careless about what entered my heart?

That realization changed how I lived.


What We Feed Our Minds Shapes Our Hearts

I became intentional.

I became careful about the music I listen to.

The television shows I watch.

The conversations I entertain.

The news I consume.

The books I read.

And yes...

The social media I allowed into my life.

Because every voice is planting something.

Every song is teaching something.

Every headline is shaping something.

Every scroll is forming something.

Scripture says,

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable... think about such things." — Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

Paul wasn't simply giving us a positive thinking exercise.

He was teaching us how to protect our minds.

Because whatever repeatedly fills our thoughts eventually begins shaping our character.


Renewing the Mind Is More Than Positive Thinking

As a nurse practitioner, I understand the incredible ability of the brain to change.

Scientists call it neuroplasticity.

Our brains build pathways based on what we repeatedly think, practice, and experience.

The more often we travel a mental pathway, the stronger it becomes.

But as incredible as neuroplasticity is...

I have discovered something even more powerful.

The living Word of God.

Counseling helped me understand many of my unhealthy patterns.

And I thank God for it.

It taught me boundaries.

It taught me healthier habits.

It helped me recognize trauma responses.

I believe in counseling.

But something happened when I completely surrendered every part of my life to Jesus.

The Scriptures stopped being words on a page.

They became life.

The promises of God began replacing the lies I had believed for decades.

His truth became stronger than my fear.

His love became louder than my rejection.

His voice became greater than every voice that had ever tried to define me.

That was more than information.

That was transformation.


God Is More Interested in My Heart Than My Habits

When I walked away from social media, it wasn't because God handed me a list of rules.

It was because He loved me enough to show me a place where my heart still needed refining.

And I realized something.

Real spiritual maturity isn't pretending we don't have ugly places inside us.

Real spiritual maturity is becoming humble enough to admit they exist.

The world says,

"Accept yourself exactly as you are."

Jesus says,

"Come to Me exactly as you are...and let Me transform you."

There is a beautiful difference.

God never exposes our weaknesses to embarrass us.

He exposes them because He wants to heal them.


Above All Else, Guard Your Heart

One of my favorite verses in all of Scripture says,

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." — Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

Above all else.

Not after everything else.

Not if you have time.

Above all else.

Why?

Because everything flows from it.

Your words.

Your relationships.

Your reactions.

Your peace.

Your worship.

Your joy.

Your decisions.

Your ministry.

Everything.

The condition of your heart matters.

More than your reputation.

More than your accomplishments.

More than your followers.

More than your image.

God is after your heart.


What God Has Been Teaching Me

I still have things to overcome.

I still have places where God is shaping me.

And I hope I always will.

Because I never want to become so spiritually proud that I stop letting the Holy Spirit search my heart.

Today, I don't miss social media.

Not because it was all bad.

But because I found something better.

I found more peace.

More quiet.

More time in God's Word.

More room for prayer.

More gratitude.

More joy.

Most of all...

I found a deeper awareness that healing isn't just about what God removes from our lives.

It is about what He grows inside of us.


A Prayer for a Guarded Heart

Father,

Search my heart.

Show me the places where I have become comfortable with thoughts, attitudes, or habits that look nothing like Jesus.

Give me the humility to receive Your correction without shame.

Help me love truth more than comfort.

Help me choose wisdom over temporary satisfaction.

Renew my mind through Your Word.

Make my heart look more like Yours every single day.

Above all else...

Teach me to guard it.
